JEAN MIOL – THE RESISTANT

Jean Miol was single.

Since the Normandy landings, the patriots of Peille were organised as Patriotic Militia Forces. On the 15th of August, the general mobilisation was announced, and the communal territory was protected by fort Maginot of Mont Agel.

Jean Miol was one of the tens of village youths tasked with defending their small bit of land. The following day, he was fatally wounded above the village. Urgently transported to the hospital of Monaco by Octave Nicolaï, butcher in Peille and member of the Resistance, he died on the 20th of August.

Place Jean Miol was inaugurated in 1946 but quickly fell into abandon. It was inaugurated a second time in 2014, with a commemorative plaque featuring his picture.
