FEAST OF SAINT-MARTIN

Description

Saint Martin, Gaul’s main evangelist, marked the history of France as the Bishop of Tours and the protector of a great many churches.
It is no coincidence that Peace was declared on the 11th of November 1918, Saint Martin’s day.
Martin of Tours, as a former soldier who converted to religion, symbolises the army, which is why his saints day was chosen for the signature of the peace treaty ending the war among nations, reflecting the preference of French negotiators.
For France it has come to symbolise the sacrifice of those who fought in the wars, and more locally this day symbolises the protection afforded to the SAINT-MARTIN DE PEILLE neighbourhood.

Thus, Saint-Martin de Peille honours, every year in November, Saint Martin of Tours, the Patron protector of the neighbourhood. Saint Martin’s saints day is first and foremost a patronal festivity during which a mass is celebrated, and all the local inhabitants gather for a moment of happy discussions relating to local goings-on. It was the opportunity to feast a last time before the Advent’s fast. Singing and dancing were ways to pay homage to the charity and wisdom of Saint Martin.

Saint Martin’s day grew in importance and remains a highly popular event; it testifies to how the commune and its inhabitants are attached to their traditions.
